more4 Swimming Pool Chemical Myths Debunked

Not only do we hold the lowest prices on all chemicals and swimming pool supplies for your pool or spa, we offer same day delivery and free water analysis to our local customers. Today we’re taking a look at pool chemistry – it’s complicated! That is why myths are common around pool chemical use, or pool chemistry in general.
Today’s post is a curated collection of myths surrounding pool chemistry or pool chemical use. You’ve probably heard of some of these before, and some may challenge your belief system.
- Chlorine makes the eyes red. Like smelling a strong chlorine smell, red eyes can be an indication that the pool needs to be shocked, to remove chloramines in the water.
- It’s necessary to shock the pool every week. Shocking the pool is only necessary for 3 reasons, the first of which is to remove chloramines, second reason is to destroy visible algae, and the third reason is to oxidize the water, or kill any pathogens that have managed to escape normal, everyday chlorination.
- Test strips are just as accurate as test kits. Not true! Test strips are very convenient and quick to use for pool water testing, but the results can be vastly different when tested side by side with a liquid drop style test kit.
- All pool chemicals are the same. A long time ago, 30 years or more – this would have been true, but today chemists have fine tuned pool chemicals to perform better and have less byproducts or unintended reactions.
Water Chemistry 101
I found this blog the other day, it basically explains what you should be keeping the your level of chlorine in your pool to keep bacteria and algae out. What I found interesting, experts are just figuring out something that I have been doing for the past 22 years. All these years, the industry has been telling you to keep your chlorine level around 1 to 1.5 ppm (No way, not in South Florida). Now experts are finding out that certain levels of stabilizer and low levels of chlorine, will not kill certain contaminates. Duh! They should have just asked me! Those who have been dealing with me for that long or over the years, know I’ve tried keeping your chlorine around 5 ppm or even a little higher and that’s why your pools have always stayed nice and clear; when your neighbors pool(that go to those other pool stores out there)always has algae……Just saying! So what’s the lesson learned here??? Make sure you tell those neighbors, family and friends that constantly have green pools, start having their water tested by A Real Pool Store…… and that, I told you so! _____________________________________________________________________________

moreVariable Speed Pool Pumps
By now I am sure that you have heard of the new technology known as Variable Speed Pool Pumps – with a permanent magnet induction motor, they run cool to the touch, and are quieter than standard motors. The best part is – they can save over 75% off your pool pump electrical bill. This can save hundreds of dollars per year.
But why all the talk of variable speed pumps? In states such as Arizona, Florida, California and Texas, laws are now on the books that are requiring pumps on new pool construction to be using a dual speed or variable speed pump or motor.
A standard single speed pump uses a stator/rotor type motor which operates at 3400 rpm. Imagine the gas consumption your car would have if, no matter what – your engine always ran at 3400 RPM.
The rpm on a Variable speed motors, on the other hand, can be adjusted to turn only as fast as they need to, to get the job done. The motors used on a variable speed pool pump use a permanent magnet design which runs cooler, lasts longer and is extremely quiet.
Not only do Variable Speed Pumps save you money by using less electricity. Another side benefit is that filtration is typically better at a slower flow rate. When your filtration is better, you save money because we need to use less sanitizers to keep the pool water clear.
